Specialized Turbo Vado SL E-Bike The One I’ve Been Waiting For

I’ve sometimes joked that there must be an unwritten law that says e-bikes have to be ugly. While there have been bikes that buck the ugly trend, alas, most are concepts, yet-to-ship crowd funders or limited-run customs. If there is such a hit-me-with-that-ugly-stick law, Specialized is now guilty of breaking that law with their 28-mile-per-hour Turbo Vado SL. Finally, a major manufacturer is delivering an e-bike that I’d like to have in my garage. No, I take that back. I don’t want it in the garage; I want my butt…

Super73 And PeopleForBikes Make Strange Bedfellows

Received a “call to action” request from electric-motorized bicycle company Super73 and the trade organization, PeopleForBikes. Both want me to encourage the National Park Service (NPS) to adopt new regulations that would allow electric-motorized bicycles access to roads and trails managed by the NPS that are currently designated for non-motorized users. It is not surprising that a trade organization wants new regulations that will help its members sell more products. That’s what trade organizations do. What is surprising is their teaming with Super73. This company only offers one model that…

Get Paid $500 To Buy An E-Bike

This is not a scam and it is not the usual “discount” off an inflated suggested retail price offered by an e-bike company. This is an honest-to-God $500 check for buying an e-bike. The deal kicked off on Earth Day and is offered by the Redwood Coast Energy Authority (RCEA). Here is how it works. Make the best possible deal on any bike from the RCEA’s approved e-bike models (listed here) and the RCEA will send you a cool $500 on top of any deal you worked out at your…

The United Kingdom’s Shropshire Star is reporting that 60-year-old Christabel Timmins suffered 55-percent burns and died of multiple organ failure after a charging e-bike battery exploded and caught fire to Timmins’ motorhome. The tragic story can be read by clicking here. I have posted a number of tips to reduce the risks when charging your e-bike’s battery.  After reading the specifics of this tragedy, I’ve add one more tip…Don’t charge an e-bike battery in a confined space like a motorhome, RV, boat, automobile, van or shed. Here are all my…

Intense E-Bikes Coming To A Motorcycle Shop Near You – UPDATED

Intense Bikes struck an amazing deal with powersports super distributor Parts Unlimited to distribute their Intense Tazer MX E-bike to a claimed 12,000 powersports dealerships worldwide. In a word, wowzer! While we have reported how various motorcycle companies have jumped into the E-bike business, this agreement is a serious threat to these motorcycle manufacturers who distribute only through their authorized dealership network. Parts Unlimited (or Parts for short) has no such limitations. Parts has the ability to sell the Tazer MX E-bike to any powersports retailer involved in motorcycle sales,…

Jeep E-Bike To Debut In June

There has been a lot of hoopla surrounding the Jeep e-Bike (that’s its official name so far) since Bill Murray introduced it during a Super Bowl TV commercial (not something you expect to see from bicycle or E-bike companies). The bike is to be released in June and I assume it will be sold through Jeep dealerships as an accessory item to a Jeep purchase. It may be used as a buying incentive. Who will service the e-Bike after delivery? Probably your local independent bicycle shop. The announcement is a…

Modified E-Bike’s Fiery Explosion A Warning

An E-bike with a modified battery ignited into flames that were quickly contained because of the fire’s close proximity to an extinguisher. Reports were not clear if the bike was privately owned or used by a food-delivery service. The Straits Times reports that the fire took place in Singapore where, unlike in the United States, there are strict laws on e-bike modifications (that obviously didn’t deter this owner from making modifications) and there are a much larger number of E-bikes in operation than in the States. As E-bike use expands…
