The One E-Bike That Represents Everything Wrong With E-Bike Use

Electric-motorized bicycles can help reduce traffic congestion, parking issues and maybe pollution. Plus, they are a lot of fun to operate. While they have obvious community benefits, I’ve never believed they belong on natural-surface trails shared by hikers, runners, mountain bikers and equestrians. Electric-motorized bikes are way too fast compared to others using these trails. If owners want an off-road experience, they belong in areas designated for Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV). The new Suru Scrambler represents everything I see wrong with allowing electric-motorized bicycles on non-OHV trails. The Suro Scrambler, using…

Runaway TerraTrikes Prompt Immediate Recall

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that the TerraTrike Rambler E.V.O. has been recalled because its 750-watt-electric-motor is reported to be taking off without rider input. Vehicle owners should stop using the TerraTrike immediately. This recall involves yellow TerraTrike Rambler Electrical Vehicle Option ( E.V.O.) recumbent trikes with an electric motorized wheel. The trikes have two wheels in the front and one wheel in the back with a large black hub motor. “Terra Trike” is printed on the front of the back rest area. The model name “Rambler…

Volkswagen Bends The Truth Again – This Time With Their New Cargo eBike

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles showed the brand’s electric-motorized cargo bike for the first time in North America at the L.A. Auto Show. Volkswagen, still reeling from their emissions scandal, is claiming the Cargo e-Bike concept is designed to make emissions-free deliveries in tight locals “like pedestrian-only city centers.” But wait. Why would Volkswagen’s motorized vehicle be allowed in pedestrian-only areas? Some municipalities might grant such a vehicle an exemption but it is presumptuous of Volkswagen to claim that has already been done. This company seems committed to making promises they can’t…

UPDATE: E-Bikes Not Only Electric Vehicle To Poise Fire Hazards – The Finger Pointing Begins

November 3, 2018: Gizmodo is reporting that Segway, the supplier of the Lime Bikes scooters that have caught fire or overheated, fired off a response today that, while not mentioning Lime Bikes directly, points the finger at the scooter rider as the real source of the overheating problem. The response says: “We have observed that operational hazards do rise from extreme abuse and vandalism of the vehicles in the scooter-sharing market. Considering the fact that the management and maintenance of shared scooters and the identification of damaged vehicles highly rely…

New York Post’s Steve Cuozzo Anti-Cycling Rant Hurts Everyone

Steve Cuozzo’s editorial against the use of bicycles in New York City is so misguided that, as a cyclist, it is hard to read it or take it seriously. There may be some valid points in his editorial, but the racial and sexist overtone drowns out what little common sense the editorial possesses. If you find the time to read the editorial, you might want to drop Steve a message with your feelings. This is especially important if you are a female or a non-white male rider (because Steve doesn’t…

An E-Bike So Stealthy Only Your Legs Will Know The Truth – UPDATED 8/31

Update August 31, 2018: The Zeitgeist website has changed since we last visited it back in May and the revamped website is a little puzzling. Gone is the bike’s selling price, details on the $500 refundable reservation and delivery estimates. In their place is a “reservation” link that sends the reader to an e-mail address. They did add that the bike will be available in small, medium or large and that the bike’s claimed weight has been reduced to 28.7 pounds. This is a neat bike if they can pull…

Trek Powerfly 5 Stolen During “Test Ride” and I Found My Favorite New Newspaper

It is a total bummer that a hard-working bike shop owner was duped out of a brand-new Trek Powerfly 5 after a customer taking a test spin decided not to return. He still might return from the test ride, but he has been gone since August 3. Unless he borrowed a battery charger at the same time, the battery has to be dead by now. Maybe he is pushing the bike back to the shop? Reporting on the extended test ride was Arcata’s Mad River Union in their Police Log…

Enter To Win An iZip E3 Moda E-Bike By Taking A Survey

A bicycle trade organization, People For Bikes, is offering riders a chance to win an iZip E3 E-bike (valued at $3749 but being blown out by iZip for $2999) for taking a rider survey that helps rate your community for its bicyclebility (a word I just made up that I don’t believe will stick). The survey will identify where cyclists are welcome and where more work needs to be done to make them welcome. Share your feelings on local cycling and earn a chance to win an electric-motorized bicycle. Good…

Clean Republic’s Hill Topper E-bike Kits Recalled Due To Unintended Acceleration

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a product recall for Clean Republic’s Hill Topper E-bike Controllers due to reports of unintended motor acceleration after water had penetrated the controllers. Clean Republic, based in Seattle, has received six reports of riders losing control when the motor accelerated without rider input, including one reported injury resulting in scrapes and bruises to the rider. Riders (and there are around 3,500 of you) should immediately stop using the recalled motor controller circuit boards and kits and contact the Clean Republic for a free…
