Found Along The Trail: McKenzie River Trail

“Found Along The Trail” is a series of unusual, surprising, shocking, funny, sad and downright strange things seen during a mountain bike ride. This one was seen just off The McKenzie River National Recreational Trail near Belknap Hot Springs (a highly-recommended destination).

Oregon’s beautiful McKenzie River National Recreational Trail runs under a pine-tree canopy so thick that, if it is raining, you might not feel a drop. It routes riders past waterfalls, lakes and hot springs while following the McKenzie River. If you look close, you might just see this moss-covered Caterpillar earth mover.

Early Retirement: It is impossible to imagine how the decision was made to pull the plug on this epic piece of equipment. Could the mechanical issues have been so dire that the repair costs exceeded the machine’s total value?
Alone in the Woods: This dozer may have slowed a forest fire, cleared a landslide or help build a road. It is said a machine doesn’t have a soul until it is retired from use. This tractor has soul.
