NYC NEEDS COMPREHENSIVE POLICY ON E-BIKE USE

UPDATED: October 20, 2017: New York City’s war on e-bike use has escalated according to a DNAinfo article. Instead of adopting a comprehensive plan for sensible e-bike use, the mayor of New York City has taken the misguided approach of declaring all-out war on the very vehicles that could reduce traffic congestion, parking issues and polution in his city. Sad. There are no small problems in America’s largest city (the eighth largest in the world).  New York City’s mass of humanity crammed onto a 23-square-mile island magnifies everything, both the…

CORSA MOTOCLASSICA RETURNS TO WILLOW SPRINGS APRIL 21-23

UPDATE: April 11, 2017 – Sorry, but I won’t be making it out to this event. It falls on the same weekend as the Steve Tilford Memorial event. It has been a number of years since I’ve made it out to the Corsa Motoclassica vintage motorcycle road race at Willow Springs Raceway in Rosamond, California, but I hope to make up for that on this year’s April 21-23 race weekend.  The event is sanctioned by AHRMA (American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association) and runs over three days.  My advice is to…

CAPE EPIC PUSHES THE SPEED AND PAIN BARRIER

The South African Cape Epic mountain bike stage race is not for everybody. A rider commits to spending 8 days in a mountain bike saddle to climb about 49,000 feet while covering 430 miles, all the time working with a partner (this is a team race) to beat 1200 other like-minded masochists.  You would imagine the promoters must have problems filling all the available spots, but you’d be wrong.  The early entries sell out in a matter of minutes and the remaining $5,690-entry-fee slots are awarded via a lottery. Yes,…

PRETTY IN PINK

The phrase “running when parked” is code for a once treasured possession that has been neglected in the corner of the garage or tool shed for far too long. Lacking the energy, time or resources to bring the little beauty back to life, the owner lists it for sale in hopes that a new owner will massage it back to health. Our collection of RWP’ed bikes fall into two distinct categories; treasure or trash. And you are the only one who can properly judge which category the bike belongs in.

MEETING TEAM MOTO XXX

It has been 20 years since I sat down with Erik Sandin, Jordan Burns and Kurt Haller for a story on the Team Moto XXX’s owners that appeared in Motocross Journal’s December 1997 issue.  I don’t remember all the interviews I’ve done over the years, but I remember that one. Why? Erik, Jordan and Kurt were total originals; outsiders who approached professional motocross from a fresh and irreverent direction. They raised the money for the team from video sales and had a great attitude towards racing and their riders. “I…
