When you pull into the dirt parking lot of Black Mountain Cycles (some riders carry their bikes to avoid a dusting), you don’t expect this humble little shop to be run by a totally over-qualified guy named Mike Varley. I met Mike when he was the shop manager (and a mechanic) at North County San Diego’s most respected bike shop. It didn’t surprise me when he left the shop to work for Haro Bikes and Masi as a bicycle product development manager. The guy is sharp and I believe both Haro and Masi had their strongest years (sales and product-wise) under Mike’s tenure.
I’m sure Point Reyes Station’s beauty, kicked-back pace and independent radio station (where Mike has a show every week) is what lured Mike to leave the “industry job” and establish Black Mountain Cycles. Mike has launched his own brand of bikes and his shop’s showroom is like a museum. Black Mountain Cycles’ customers are being served by a guy with more experience than most bicycle company presidents! No wonder Black Mountain Cycles is considered among the finest of full-service repair shops in the country.
Visiting the shop is worth the time. Just let Mike do his job and if you don’t need anything for your bike, at least pick up a T-shirt to two.
