The idea of a Society of Racing Cyclists Team reunion (formerly the Skunk River Cyclists Team) came from Paul Vine and was immediately championed by another former team mechanic, Calvin Jones. These two spearheaded an effort to make the reunion a reality. All they had to do was get people to agree on the dates (August 5th), a place (Cable, Wisconsin), the food, the presentation and the weekend’s activities. No small feat and somehow, against all odds, they pulled it off.
I take pride in posting detailed stories here on Jimmy Mac On Two Wheels. Unfortunately, this is not going to be one of them. There is no way I can do justice to the reunion or the team. It would require writing a book for outsiders to understand the importance that this team played in American cycling. The team won Olympic Gold medals, National Championships, developed riders who went on to win the Giro d’ Italia, Tour of Switzerland and a stage of the Tour de France, set the American Hour Record, won the Coors Classic and secured the first-ever Mountain Bike National Championship. And these accomplishments are only scratching the surface.
So, my apologies to people who weren’t part of the team. You are not going to “get it” from the photos posted below. Those in attendance will never forget the event and the strong friendships that have stood the test of time. If anyone wants a hi-resolution of any photo posted here, just let me know and I’ll send it along.
