Somis Road’s Dead Man’s Curve

Somis Road’s Dead Man’s Curve

Somis Road, that runs between Las Posas Road in Camarillo to East Los Angeles Avenue (the 118) in Somis, California, is a two-mile stretch of two-lane blacktop. It is relatively flat and straight with a few slight dogleg bends and, just to keep drivers on their toes, the Somis Road’s Dead Man’s Curve.

It doesn’t look like much on the map, but this turn, between Paty’s Farm produce stand and Somis AgRx,  may be the most expensive curve in Ventura County. It doesn’t take long after Caltrans replaces the demolished guard rail that a driver takes the railing out again.

The last time Caltrans finished replacing the damaged guard rail was on March 24, 2024. It was demolished again on Sunday October 6th*. That’s 28 weeks or 196 days. I don’t know if that is a record for the longest time the railing has survived or the shortest. I get the feeling it is close to an average.

How long will it take for Caltrans to repair the guard rail? I’ll keep an eye on it and report on their progress. Once they do, we can start the clock to see how long it takes for a motorist to demolish it again.

(*It may have been taken out on October 4th or 5th but I was out of town.)

Are you feeling lucky?: I no longer ride my bicycle on Somis Road and can’t believe I used to ride it weekly in my youth. Talk about tempting fate. Smart pedestrians will never walk on the outside of this curve and Paty’s Farm’s shoppers should keep one eye on the highway.
Bicycle riders not welcomed: The shoulder is close to non existent and if you end up here at the wrong moment, Jack, you’re dead. Somis Road sees heavy truck traffic and speeding motorists.
