Saturday Night At The Costa Mesa Speedway

Saturday Night At The Costa Mesa Speedway

It may not boast the crowds it once did (and with a $30 admission price, that’s understandable) but going to the Saturday night speedway race at the Costa Mesa Fairgrounds is still something special. Race promoter Brad Oxley knows how to put on a great show while showing total respect for his racers, from the professional speedway guys to the minibikers. I had not been to a Costa Mesa event for a number of years and that’s just wrong. This is something that needs to be experienced at least once a year.

No Shows: Don’t let the empty seats fool you. These rows were marked “reserved” but nobody showed up to fill them. Too bad for them. They missed great racing.
Non-Stop: There is no delay in the action (like at flat track and Supercross races). As soon as once class is done, the next heat rolls out. Turned out to be over two hours of action except to tend to a few riders who went down during the evening.
Larry Was Watching: Couldn’t help but believe that Larry Huffman was looking down from speedway Heaven while announcing the racing. The current announcer did a great job and the track’s PA system is the best I’ve heard at a motorcycle event.
