David Mann Chopperfest Breeds Creativity, Ingenuity and Superior Workmanship

Ventura California, Sunday, February 4, 2018: The gates to the 14th annual David Mann Chopperfest were supposed to open on December 10th, 2017. Problem was, the Ventura County Fairgrounds were full of Thomas Fire evacuees and first responders. The event’s promoters got the word out that everyone had an extra two months to get their choppers ready for the show. They moved the event to the first weekend in February and with the weather cooperating, it felt more like June! Does that mean if the promoters move the event back…

Honda CBX Switch-A-Roo Does Not Fool Us

The classified ad reads like the often-repeated urban legend of someone selling a family heirloom worth thousands for chump change. A Honda CBX from an estate sale for $1400? That bike is worth 15 times that. Steal that bike before the seller realizes what a horrible mistake they’ve made. But wait. Scrolling down the ad reveals the photo used for the main image is an example of what a pristine, fully-restored CBX looks like. But it is not the bike the seller is trying to pawn off. The actual bike…

A Beginner’s Guide To The Mecum Motorcycle Auctions

The Las Vegas Mecum Motorcycle Auction that ran from January 23rd through the 27th was my first time attending a motorcycle auction of this magnitude. I’ve got a feeling it won’t be my last. The 5-day auction will feel like nirvana to any self-respecting motorcycle enthusiast and if that sounds like you, you need to go. Attending an auction for the first time can be a bit intimidating so here is what to expect and how to survive. Cheap admission to a great show Twenty bucks gets you in the…

Family Parts With Beezer That Deserves Another Chance

This is tough because it has been sitting a long, long time. This 650 needs more attention than most mere-mortal mechanics could faithfully expend. Still, I hesitate. There is an obvious alternative, but the thought of parting out this old BSA brings a tear to my eye. It seems a shame for it to disappear into parts bins. I can only hope somebody with the right talent and energy will bring this old family member back to the street.

1979 Fantic Chopper Is Italy’s Take On Easy Rider

Never saw one of these on the road back in the 70’s and I know I would have remembered seeing it. This is a spectacular motorcycle that was produced by Italian motorcycle company Fantic to capitalize on the 70’s chopper craze in America (and probably Italy where they must have sold thousands of these ape-hanging, sissy-barred beauties). The asking price of $7500 is about what a Triumph Bonneville from the same era would go on the block for. That’s a bit steep and might explain why this bike has shown…

Fall Turns To Winter For This RWP’ed

Where do I start with this amazing ad? First, the seller only posted two photos so we can only guess he didn’t include the Yamaha Midnight Special because why? It is a little rougher than the Honda and flame-tanked Suzuki? If that is the case, I’d really love to see the Yamaha. Based on the fallen leaves framing the two pictured bikes, I’ve got to figure snow has fallen on these little gems by now. A white dusting might actually improve the bikes’ appearances. The $1000 asking price for all…

Honda Chopper Worth The Asking Price

This doesn’t happen all that often. A Running When Parked that is a deal (and maybe a steal). This 70’s Honda chopper appears to be well constructed and I don’t see any obvious signs of abuse. This bike was a show stopper back in its day, and there is no reason after a little TLC that it couldn’t be winning blue ribbons at a custom bike show. Even the $2500 asking price seems like a bargain. You could part this bike out for double that price. If you feel born…

Pristine Yamaha DT1 RWP’ed For Only $700

Okay, this was a mean trick. The Running When Parked DT1 has seen a lot more abuse than the one pictured above. A DT1 in the above condition could probably fetch a cool $3,500 (more if pulling hard enough on the heartstrings of the right buyer). The one below will be hard-pressed to get its asking price. There does not appear to be much in the way of usable components and it does look like something is growing out of the heat shield on the exhaust pipe. Still, it would…

A Yamaha YDS3 RWP’ed

The phrase “running when parked” (RWP) is code for a once treasured possession that has been neglected in the corner of the garage or tool shed for far too long. Lacking the energy, time or resources to bring the little beauty back to life, the owner lists it for sale in hopes that a new owner will massage it back to health. Our collection of RWP bikes fall into two distinct categories; treasure or trash. And you are the only one who can properly judge which category the bike belongs…
