Just How Many E-Bike Companies Are There Anyway? You’ll Be Stunned

It was after viewing endless advertisements from obscure e-bike companies that I began to wonder: Just how many e-bike companies are there anyway? The answer is shocking. And ever expanding. I went down the rabbit hole and haven’t hit the den yet. I skipped the obvious, big-name players. You should already know that every major bicycle company (like Specialized, Trek, Giant and Cannondale) offers e-bikes. There is also an ever-increasing number of motorcycle and automobile companies jumping into the e-bike game. I haven’t counted them either. The e-bikes being pitched…

A List Of “Rare” E-Bike And E-Bike Battery Charging Fires – UPDATED

The e-bike industry and its trade organizations are often quoted as saying e-bike fires are “a rare occurrence” (if they comment on the issue at all). These organizations are more apt to use the sanitized phrase “a runaway thermal event” that is code for “the bike’s battery blew up into flames.” The list of e-bike factories, retailers and owners who have experienced meltdowns is indeed a small percentage of total e-bike factories, retailers and owners. That shouldn’t make you feel a lot better if you have an e-bike charging in…

Segway-Ninebot Shared E-Bikes Are UL 2849 Certified

I recently posted about the advantages of demanding to see the Underwriters Laboratory label before purchasing your next e-bike. There is encouraging news that Segway Commercial has opted to design and manufacture their Segway-Ninebot shared e-bike to meet UL 2849 certification.  That’s good news for riders and communities who depend on reliable shared e-bikes that meet established electrical and fire safety standards. Kudos to Segway.

Look For The UL Label: Why Your New E-Bike Needs UL Certification – UPDATED

I get downhearted and disgusted posting so many stories about e-bike battery fires. These events include fatalities and loss of personal property into the millions of dollars. Unfortunately, this burden seems to rest on my humble shoulders. I don’t know of anyone else shinning a light on one of the e-bike industry’s most guarded dirty secrets. Ranting about the fire potential lurking in every e-bike is frustrating because I don’t see a viable solution to the problem. I pass along tips for reducing the chances of an e-bike battery fire…

E-Bikes Add Speed To San Luis Obispo’s Emergency Response Squad

This is cool news out of the San Luis Obispo Fire Department. In an effort to improve rescue response times, the SLO fire department has added a secret weapon. E-bikes! “It is amazing how much faster our paramedics can reach patients on our city’s trails,” said Fire Engineer and Paramedic Ryan Mason, who led the department’s new e-bike program development. “What used to take 45 minutes to an hour to reach an injured hiker or mountain biker can now take us less than 10 minutes.” The City’s fire department partnered…

Serial 1 Custom-fabricated E-Bike Fetches $14,200 At Auction

Serial 1, the e-bike division of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, may have come up with a profitable new business model for selling e-bikes if they can repeat what happened today. Start with a stock model, hand it off to a creative customizer and then auction it off. That’s exactly what Serial 1 did with their Mosh/CTY model. The Mosh/CTY normally sells for $3799 but after it was transformed into a Schwinn Stingray-ish custom, it raked in $14,200.  The winning bid seems kinda crazy for a bike that is easily duplicated. Take $14,200,…

Custom-Built Serial 1 E-Bike On Auction “For Display Purposes Only” – UPDATED

The Serial 1 custom-fabricated, one-of-a-kind Mosh/Chopper is an appealing e-bike that any kid would be stoked to ride to school. Heck, there are a lot of grown kids who would want to cruise on the Mosh/Chopper (including me). There is only one catch. Reading the auction’s small print (it is not really “small,” just hidden at the bottom of the page) reveals that the custom concept is for the eyes only, not for your feet. That’s right, even though the video shows a talented young rider pulling an endless wheelie,…

E-Bike Dominates Rush-Hour Race

GeekWire recently conducted a rush-hour race through Seattle that pitted the most popular forms of urban transportation against each other. The only notable and puzzling omission from the starting grid participants was a motorcycle. Maybe GeekWire will allow one to compete in their next race.  If I was a betting man, I would be richer today. My money would have been on the e-biker (it would have been on the motorcycle if there had been one in the race). Kudos to GeekWire for a great article and a fun event.

Espin Doesn’t Practice What They Preach – UPDATED

UPDATED 8/5/21: The battery safety tips have been removed from the espin website and that’s too bad. I wish I had made a copy of the article because it passed along valuable information. This happened after I posted this story on July 9th. When I posted my story, I hoped espin would change their marketing image. It never occurred to me that they would leave the bike-on-the-beach photo and remove their battery safety tips. Strange.  July 9. 2021: I commended espin, an electric-motorized bicycle company, for their article packed with…
