Mystery Bike Identified As A Velocette LE

After unearthing a brilliant vintage British motorcycle collection, I couldn’t identify one of the bikes that I found most interesting. Jody Weisel, Editor of Motocross Action Magazine and Edison Dye Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, came to the rescue. “That scooter is a Velocette LE. It was produced from 1948 to 1970. The engine is a four-stroke, side-valve, water cooled, horizontally-opposed, three-speed, shaft drive, 150cc, twin-cylinder engine. There was a Mark I model with a 150cc engine and a Mark II model with a 192cc engine (and the one you saw…

Unearthing A Hidden Trove Of British Motorcycles And Memorabilia

Sometimes you just gotta know the right people and be in the right place. The right place was outside of Bristol, England and the right person was Chris Monk. I met Chris when he traveled from his home in England to attend the U.S.G.P. at Carlsbad Raceway. Don’t remember the year, but it was a long time ago. We’ve never lost contact. A visit to see Chris was part of our recent hot lap of Great Britain, Scotland and Wales. Chris welcomed us and immediately suggested we visit a friend…

National Bicycle Dealers Association To Address E-Bike Fire Risks In Webinar Series UPDATED

The National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA) just announced four webinars dealing with e-bike fire potential. The series will be aimed at retailers but I would imagine that any e-bike owner could benefit from the disseminated information. The first webinar took place on May 24th and addressed e-bike explosions, fire safety and product third-party certification. Comments from a New York City Fire Department official were very enlightening as were all the topics covered by the panel members. You can watch this webinar by clicking here. The second webinar takes place on…

Bike Library Offers Free Transportation (And Recreation) To Everyone

While on a recent vacation in Scotland, I spotted the Bike Library of Fort William. Like the name implies, a person can check out a bike and see how it fits into their world. The library has a number of e-bikes to loan also. The Library hopes that by lending a bike for a few days or a few weeks, the rider may find that they reduce car usage and get some health benefits at the same time. If the borrower likes the bike, the Library can assist in its…

Recall: Santa Cruz Heckler 9 E-Bike Dropping Its Battery Like A Bomb

Santa Cruz Bicycles has recalled their Heckler 9 e-bike after customers report of the battery falling out of the bike’s frame, creating both fall and fire hazards. Santa Cruz explains that, “The latch mechanism that holds the battery in place can malfunction, causing the battery to dislodge from the frame and fall to the ground, posing a fall hazard to the rider.  Additionally, the latch spring can cause additional wear on the battery housing over time, posing a fire hazard.” Riders should stop riding the recalled bicycle and should remove…

Yamaha 250 Cafe Racer Running When Parked Sold Fast

I found this ad last night and this morning, the posting is gone. I’m not all that surprised. What a fun bike this would be to scream around the twisty roads between my home and Ojai. I say “scream” because unlike fire-breathing 600 to 1000cc crotch-rocket motorcycles that can easily top triple-digit speeds, this little 250 would reward its rider for riding smoothly. You won’t get back to the cafe before the song ends, but you should get back to the cafe. I think the motorcycle industry has gone down…

Stumbling Onto The 2022 Scottish Six Day Trials

To kill time between The Divine Comedy concerts (one in Birmingham, England and the other in Cardiff, Wales) Gail, my favorite traveling companion (sorry, Lance), best friend and wife, and I decided to drive a lap of the United Kingdom. Following in the footsteps of Rick Steves and adding days of our own design, we ended up in the beautiful Scottish town of Fort William. The trials bike in the hardware-store window on the cobblestone main street caught my attention. You don’t see motorcycles on display like that very often.…
