Buyer Beware: You Can’t Get This Electric Motorcycle For $99

Please don’t fall for this scam. The ad is posted to my Facebook feed and it shows what appears to be a $3900 Luna Sur Ron X Bike for $99. How can they do it? They can’t. Hitting the ad’s link took me to a Tigerfitness order form for a “2019 Hot Trend Super Fast Bike.” That Chinglish should be warning enough but there are more clues. Inspecting the bike’s photo reveals a Luna watermark near the front wheel. This scammer simply lifted the bike’s image off the Luna website.…

Concept Bicycle Helmet That Tucks Into A Water Bottle

No doubt, it is a cool concept. Make a bicycle helmet sans a hard-surface shell that can fold into the palm of your hand and tuck neatly into a tube the size of a bicycle water bottle. Make it so small that it could easily be mistaken for a baseball hat (with a three-point retention strap). Finally, make this helmet meet or exceed the U.S. CPSC and EU EN-1078 cycling safety standards. Park & Diamond, a company that has never made a bicycle helmet or any other product, claims they…

The E-bike Battle Is Now Between Bicycle And Motorcycle Companies

It seems like every month another motorcycle company jumps into a crowded field of bicycle companies offering electric-motorized bicycles. Italy’s Ducati Motorcycles, who offered a single E-bike model in 2019, expands their 2020 selection to three models including the E-Scambler (on the far right) that appears to be intended for on-road use. Ducati joins Bultaco, Yamaha, Harley-Davidson and KTM in a head-to-head assault on a market that has been serviced by E-bike-only companies (like Pedego, Sondors and Juiced) and established bicycle brands (like Trek, Specialized, Cannondale and Giant) who offer…

Why Communities Can’t Trust Micromobility Rental Businesses

Spokane’s KREM2 reports that a Lime charging facility caught fire in Spokane Valley on October 7th. The report explains that the fire’s cause was unknown, but a Spokane Valley Fire Department spokesperson believed it was likely an electrical problem. Anyone with the most basic understanding of battery charging (and the dangers associated with battery charging) would immediately pick up on two glaring red flags in the KREM2 report. First, the report says that “no one was in the warehouse at the time” of the fire. Rule one for avoiding a…

Updated: Harley-Davidson LiveWire Back On The Grid

October 19, 2019: Engadget is reporting that Harley-Davidson has resumed production on their electric-powered LiveWire motorcycle. The article states that a charging problem was only found in a single vehicle. Harley-Davidson, who had cautioned LiveWire owners to only charge their bikes at certified dealership charging stations, say owners are fine charging their LiveWires at home. Harley-Davidson Pulls The Plug On Electric-Powered LiveWire October 14, 2019: Reuters is reporting that Harley-Davidson has stopped production and deliveries of its first electric motorcycle, the LiveWire, due to a problem that the company dubbed…

Dutch Insurers And Firefighters Worry About Increase Of E-bike Fires

The Dutch, already ranked first in the world for per-capita-bicycle ridership, have adopted electric-motorized bicycles in record numbers. It is reported that e-bike sales have already surpassed the sales of human-powered bicycles (excluding children and racing bikes) in the Netherlands. With this increase in e-bike usage comes a not-so-surprising increase in fires linked to e-bike battery charging disasters. The NL Times is reporting that Dutch fire agencies and insurers are troubled by the increase in fires caused by battery charging. The article reports that e-bike fires in 2017 surpassed fires…

Cycling Without Age Offers Safe and Sane Cycling To The Elderly

Here is the feel-good story of the month. Writer Tom Hallberg of the Jackson Hole News & Guide reports on the activity of Cycling Without Age in Jackson, Wyoming. Cycling Without Age pairs pilots (who volunteer their time and leg muscles) with older residents (sometimes shut-ins) for trishaw rides around their community. These folks may not have felt the wind rushing through their hair since, well, since they had hair. Seniors jumping back on a bike find that their balance, coordination and dexterity may no longer be up to the…

Steal This ’76 Yamaha TT500 Running When Parked

Kelly Blue Book lists the value of a good-running TT500 of this vintage at $3,990. While that seems like a lot of money for a 44-year-old motorcycle, the TTs have proven to be reliable off-road workhorses and a model that has never faded from popularity. The photos show a clean bike that doesn’t appear to need much work to get it on the trail. A sweet RWP’ed motorcycle for the TT fanatic at a reasonable price. Go for it! The phrase “Running When Parked” (RWP) is code for a once…

Harley-Davidson Debuts Bicycle Line

While Harley-Davidson struggles to remain relevant by introducing new product lines that attract a younger demographic of customer, we are not sure how the Low Rider HP® will achieve this goal. The Low Rider HP (that stands for Human Powered) takes too many of its design cues from existing Harley-Davidson motorcycle models. While the electric-powered motorcycle prototypes and rich-kid scooters are closer to Harley’s desired goal of attracting buyers who are under 60 years old, the Low Rider HP appears too cumbersome and lacking in performance to ignite the passion…
