Another Beezer Running When Parked

Man, a whole lot of BSA motorcycles show up during my searches for Running When Parked candidates. Here is another beautiful example. A 1970 BSA Lightning that the owner’s nephew says enjoyed a frame-up restoration in 2005 and hasn’t been started or ridden since. The bike appears to be complete and the only thing that jumps out is the cracked paint on the side panels. Not too sure why that would happen to a bike that has been sitting unmolested for 13 years. There may have been an issue with…

Mountain Bike “Best Of” List Misleading To Potential Buyers

Singletracks, a mountain biking website, published a list of their “Best 2019 Trail Bikes.” I’ve always taken issue with this type of editorial for a lot of reasons. IT’S ONLY NOVEMBER: How can anyone name the “best” of 2019 when all the 2019 models have yet to be released? So right off, “The Best 2019 Trail Bikes We’ve Ridden So Far” or “What We Guess Will Be The Best 2019 Trail Bikes” are both more accurate titles for the piece. YOU DON’T WANT FIRST-EVER TECHNOLOGY: One of the six “Best…

A $250 Motorcycle That Looks Like A Million Bucks

I do not know how they do it? The XtremepowerUS pocket racer is a 40cc, four-stroke-powered minicycle with mechanical disc brakes that is selling today (Cyber Monday) for $250! That is around the same price as a kid’s bicycle. The product information says, “This gas pocket bike is ideal for providing driveway and parking lot commuting entertainment for kids and teenagers 13 years and older.” Not sure what “commuting entertainment” is supposed to mean but “terrorizing-the-neighborhood entertainment” might be a better description of what a 13-year-old rider is going to…

Malibu In Ashes – Before and After Images

Last week’s Woolsey Fire engulfed and destroyed a place I’ve grown to accept and appreciate as my second home. The beautiful house belonged to my wife’s mom, Donna. She and Allen, her late husband (thank the Lord he didn’t have to see this), spent 47 years in the house. Donna refers to this as time spent in paradise. The 90-year-old great grandmother is at peace with losing her home (and all her art) and is moving full-speed ahead with a champion’s determination. She already has replaced one of her cars…

How I Killed Mountain Biking And How You Can Save It – UPDATED

November 16, 2018: Here is an interesting (and long) read by Kevin Alexander of Thrillist about how his article identifying his favorite hamburger joint seems to have caused the place to close down. Guess I’m not the only one who feels a little guilt over sharing secrets. October 29, 2017: Forgive me, for I knew not what I’d done. I thought I was helping friends and strangers find great places to ride mountain bikes. How was I to know I was killing the sport at the same time? A little…

UPDATE: E-Bikes Not Only Electric Vehicle To Poise Fire Hazards – The Finger Pointing Begins

November 3, 2018: Gizmodo is reporting that Segway, the supplier of the Lime Bikes scooters that have caught fire or overheated, fired off a response today that, while not mentioning Lime Bikes directly, points the finger at the scooter rider as the real source of the overheating problem. The response says: “We have observed that operational hazards do rise from extreme abuse and vandalism of the vehicles in the scooter-sharing market. Considering the fact that the management and maintenance of shared scooters and the identification of damaged vehicles highly rely…
