SEE ANYTHING WRONG?

At the risk of being labeled a troll (having an opposing viewpoint these days is to be chastised into the dreaded “troll” category), I still have to pass this along. After posting the reasoning for not renewing my IMBA membership, a friend, who is still a member, sent me this link to a new IMBA graphic. See anything weird? The bike is clearly based on a battery-in-the-downtube, electric-motorized mountain bike. This is either IMBA’s attempt to subliminally get its members to see motorized mountain bikes as no different from human-powered…

WHERE E-BIKES CAN BE LEGALLY RIDDEN OFF-ROAD IN NEW ENGLAND

The New England Mountain Bike Association has published an article that explains where E-bikes are permitted to be ridden in New England. This information is important because manufacturers and retailers do not always properly represent where the bikes they sell can be legally operated. You can read the story in its entirety by clicking here. The biggest takeaway from the article (that mostly addresses off-pavement riding) is that in New England, E-bikes ridden off pavement are welcome on off-road trails currently designated for motorized vehicle use.  They are not permitted…

WHY I BURNED MY IMBA CARD

I feel the International Mountain Bicycling Association has recognized motorized mountain bikes as a category of mountain biking and I don’t want to fund that direction. Instead, I donated directly to a local trail organization (and continue to donate to regional trail organizations when on road trips). My reasoning to leave an organization that has done so much good for mountain bikers? Read on. EROSION of HUMAN MOTION The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) has stated that “riding e-bikes on natural-surface trails is not mountain biking. Further, we state that…

DAN ROUIT’S FLAT TRACK MUSEUM – THE DREAM CONTINUES

December 5, 2016 – Dan Rouit, who passed away on November 16, 2016 at the age of 57, was the founder, owner and curator of the Dan Rouit Flat Track Museum in Clovis, California.  Dan, who was confined to a wheelchair after being paralyzed in a freak climbing accident, had been a flat track racer in his youth and believed the sport deserved a dedicated museum filled with flat trackers, memorabilia, posters, programs, trophies, plaques, leathers, helmets and pictures.  Together with his wife Kathy, they made their dream come true.…

BMW SHOWS THE BIKE COMPANIES HOW TO OUTFIT AN ELECTRIC BIKE FOR THE PEOPLE

October 7, 1016 – BMW’s limited-edition Cruise e-Bike appears to be a wake-up call to struggling e-Bike companies. The $3,900 Limited Edition Cruise e-Bike comes in Protonic Dark Silver, with the same paint scheme used by the BMW i8 with the same name. Good looks aside, what makes the Cruise so inviting is its ergonomics. The Cruise offers an upright riding position, Continental Cruise Contact tires (smooth tread pattern and a wider profile than conventional road bikes), a suspension fork, Shimano brakes (you’d think BMW would use Magura?) and a…

SUMMER’S EARLY ARRIVAL

This freaked me out today. After a week riding the lush trails of the North Umpqua and McKenzie River in Oregon, I headed out for a ride in Wildwood Park. What happened here? In little more than a month’s time, the emerald-green hills and pastures of Wildwood have already morphed into the burrito brown color we expect later in the summer. Looks like we are in for a long, dry summer.

CHUCK “FEETS” MINERT: A LIFE LIVED TO THE FULLEST

September 28, 2016 – Upon hearing the news of Chuck Minert‘s passing, I tried my best not to feel sad or shed a tear. Chuck would not approve. He is the last guy who would want friends choked up or moping around because of what? He died? Get over it, already. Clean that air filter, top off the fuel, wipe the goggles and line up for moto 2. Chuck hated attention even in his later years when most retired racers crave to bask in the spotlight one more time. Keith…
